Father's mental health can impact children for years

Real life is different. Fathers get down, sometimes debilitatingly. And as new research from Rutgers Health reveals, when paternal depression goes undiagnosed or unaddressed, the negative social and behavioral effects on children can persist for years.

In a study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, Kristine Schmitz, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS), together with other researchers from RWJMS and from Princeton and Rider universities, reports that children exposed to paternal depression when entering kindergarten are far more likely to have teacher-reported behavioral difficulties and poor social skills at age 9.

"We need to consider depression in both parents, not just mothers," said Schmitz. "Depression is treatable, and to support the whole family, pediatricians must start talking with dads about it and developing father-focused interventions that meet their needs."

On average, between 8% and 13% of fathers in the United States will be affected by some form of depression during their child's early years, and the prevalence increases to 50% when the mother is also experiencing postpartum depression. But few studies have focused on paternal depression beyond the postnatal period or explored links between fathers' mental health and children's behaviors.

To close this gap, Schmitz and colleagues analyzed data from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study (FFCWS), a national birth cohort that randomly sampled births in 20 large U.S. cities from 1998 to 2000. The study continues to track changes in participants' lives.

Two FFCWS data points were key to Schmitz's assessment: When the children were age 5, their fathers were screened for depressive symptoms in the past year; and when they were 9, the children's teachers completed a survey that included behavioral assessments.

"Kindergarten entry is an important developmental milestone, and adversities faced at that time can lead to poorer engagement and behaviors in grade school that may persist or magnify through middle and high school," the researchers wrote.

By comparing data from 1,422 fathers—74% of whom lived with their children at least half of the time when the child was 5—and their children, and controlling for sociodemographic factors and maternal depression, the researchers were able to map a clear link between paternal depression and child conduct.

For instance, kids whose fathers reported depressive symptoms, such as feeling sad, blue or depressed when they were age 5 were, by age 9, significantly more likely to exhibit restlessness, defiance and anger as well as present lower levels of cooperation and self-esteem.

Schmitz said several reasons could explain the connection. For one, depression has been found to lead to difficulty parenting and less emotional support for the child. It can also cause conflict or other stress in the home.

UK riots led to deterioration in asylum seekers’ mental health, says report

Last summer’s riots, which took place after the murder of three girls at a Southport dance class, led to a deterioration in the mental health of asylum seekers, with many becoming fearful of walking down the street in case they were targeted by far-right protesters, according to a report.

The report from the Mental Health Foundation, published on Tuesday, identified a decline in the mental health of asylum seekers as a result of the civil unrest and attacks on hotels, compared with the state of their mental health when they published a similar report in February 2024.

Mark Rowland, the chief executive of the Mental Health Foundation, said: “One key development since our last report has been that the racist riots of summer 2024 had a terrible impact on the mental health of many people seeking asylum in UK. Some people told us they were scared to leave their accommodation, risking increased isolation, and others said they feared they’d be attacked walking down the street just because of the colour of their skin.”

He added: “The climate of hostility has increased, especially on social media which played a key role in escalating tensions. Disinformation and racist rhetoric have surged, especially on platforms like X, with some of those who spoke to us reflecting they’d see hate within minutes of logging on to the website. More action needs to be taken by the UK government to stem the impact of disinformation and hate both online and offline.”

The report also called for asylum seekers to have the right to work in any job if the Home Office has not processed their claim within six months, arguing that this would not only boost asylum seekers’ mental health but also increase tax revenue for the Treasury. The data is based on calculations by the Institute of Economic and Social Research.

According to the figures, allowing asylum seekers to work after six months would save the country £4.4bn in government expenditure, grow the economy by £1bn, increase tax revenue by £880m, reduce the mental health impacts of worklessness and destitution on asylum seekers, promote better integration, and reduce dependence on taxpayer support.

The report warned that preventing asylum seekers from getting jobs was leading to “workless stagnation”. It echoes the Lift The Ban campaign, a coalition of more than 300 charities, trades unions, businesses, faith groups and thinktanks, which have urged the government to allow asylum seekers to work in a broader range of industries.

Under the current rules, only some asylum seekers who are qualified in shortage occupations can apply for jobs if their asylum claim has not been determined after a year. In practice this system bars many from working.

Rowland added: “Giving asylum seekers the right to work is a no-brainer. Everyone – from asylum seekers, to businesses, to the government, to the NHS, to our communities – benefits when asylum seekers are given the ability to support themselves. The current system, which is both harmful and expensive, cannot continue as it is.”

The foundation, which supports asylum seekers and refugees with their mental health, through programmes across the UK, also highlighted in the report the acute poverty faced by asylum seekers who sometimes have to make a choice between skipping meals or paying the bus fare for a vital appointment.

Some felt the words “asylum seeker” stigmatised them. One child told researchers she hid the fact that she was an asylum seeker from her school friends for fear of being excluded by them if she told them about her immigration status.

Health insurance plays a crucial role in ensuring financial security against exorbitant medical expenses. But insurance coverage for mental health ailments seems to have fallen through the cracks in India. Fresh data published by the insurance entity, Marsh McLennan India, and Mpower, an education trust of a business group, have laid bare some disquieting truths. According to their RiseUP for a Better Tomorrow: Mental Health Report 2025, less than 1% of total health insurance claims in India are for treatment for mental health. Neither are mental health cover benefits offered in group insurance plans by 43% of insurers. This glaring lopsidedness is notwithstanding the fact that the Mental Healthcare Act 2017 mandates mental health coverage in insurance plans on a par with that in physical health. Further, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India’s 2019 guidelines directed insurance service providers to include mental illnesses.

Despite the legal shield as well as the stipulation by the IRDAI, a wide chasm exists between the requirements and the reality owing to several factors. First, there is an acute lack of awareness among consumers. The report found that 42% of respondents either do not have access to insurance or, worse, are not even aware that one can be insured against mental disorders; unsurprisingly, 83% of insurance companies reported minimal claims utilisation. Second, gaping flaws persist in the design and the implementation of insurance policies. The scope of most policies is limited to hospitalisation and does not cover outpatient expenditure for medication and therapy — often a protracted, lifelong process. The exclusion of mental health afflictions arising out of alcohol addiction or substance abuse and suicides, along with long waiting periods for receiving payouts, are some other hurdles preventing Indians from availing of such insurance. Social stigma around mental health is a major hindrance. As many as 48% of the respondents, the report showed, fear that they would be discriminated against if their mental health requirements were to get discovered. Government data complement these dim realities. The National Mental Health Survey of 2015-2016 found that 70-90% of mental health patients do not receive any treatment and that 60-70% of mental healthcare costs were paid for out-of-pocket. Even the government’s much-touted Ayushman Bharat Yojana has failed to provide holistic coverage.

The World Health Organization estimated that 60-70 million Indians suffer from mental health disorders. Nations like the United States of America and the United Kingdom have integrated outpatient services with mental health insurance. These can serve as templates for India, which continues to ignore a burgeoning mental health crisis.

Probiotics linked to reduced negative feelings, offering potential mental health benefits

Probiotics are "good" bacteria in the form of drinks or tablets that you can buy in the supermarket and are also found in foods like yogurts, fermented cheese and sauerkraut. There is growing interest in the possibility that probiotics improve not only gut health but also mental health.

"The gut–brain connection provides various routes through which bacteria in the gut can influence how we feel and behave, including via the vagus nerve, immune system and hormones," says Johnson.

Daily mood reports
While animal studies have previously found promising effects of probiotics on the brain and behavior, human studies have yielded inconsistent results. Johnson and Steenbergen therefore used a combination of methods to capture how probiotics might influence the ability to regulate our emotions and affect our moods. These included psychological questionnaires, daily mood reports and computer tasks testing how people process emotions.

The study was conducted in young, healthy adults who took a probiotic (containing bacteria such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium) daily for a month.

This is the first study to use daily mood reports to assess the effects of probiotics. It clearly shows that probiotics can reduce negative feelings compared to a placebo. This could mean a reduction in feelings such as anxiety, stress, fatigue or depressive tendencies.

"It is striking that by simply asking participants how they were feeling each day, we could detect the beneficial effects of probiotics on mood," says Steenbergen. "In contrast, the standard psychological questionnaires that are common in this field were not sensitive enough to pick up these changes."

No substitute for antidepressants
The researchers found that it took about two weeks for the probiotics to improve negative feelings. It takes about the same amount of time for antidepressants to work, but whereas antidepressants tend to reduce both negative and positive mood, the results showed that the probiotics only reduced negative mood.

This could be a possible benefit, although the researchers stress that probiotics should not be considered a substitute for antidepressants.

Teaching climate-resilient farming to young people in rural Global South communities and encouraging them to stay in school could help ward off mental health problems triggered by worsening climate change impacts, according to new research in Africa.

Hardship caused by severe drought, floods and storms is taking a dramatic toll on young people’s emotional wellbeing in climate-hit countries, with the effects going far beyond climate anxiety, found the groundbreaking study focused on teens in rural Madagascar.

“The fears that they go through are in the present tense, not the future tense,” said Samuel Solomon, a psychology professor at University College London (UCL) and co-author of the study conducted in remote villages in the south of the island nation off Africa’s southeast coast.

Madagascar, which is classified by the United Nations as one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable countries, is repeatedly affected by drought, extreme heat and cyclones, exacerbating hunger and setting back development in a nation where about three-quarters of people are poor.

The situation in the south is particularly dire due to changes in the climate, “with fertile land turning into desert and water sources depleting”, said the study, conducted among 83 participants with an average age of 15 in six communities.

The study – one of the first to measure the mental health effects of climate change on young people in the Global South – found “extremely high” levels of depression, anxiety and climate worry.

Its authors linked that in part to the huge impact of climate disasters on household resources. Over the previous year, 90% of the respondents had seen their families running out of food and nearly 70% had gone a day without eating.

A cartoon I saw recently summed up the difficulties our society has got itself into over mental health. It depicted the beds of the seven dwarfs from Snow White. Each of them had their name at the foot of the bed, only each one had been crossed out and replaced. Where Happy slept, the sign now read ‘Euphoric’. Grumpy’s name had been replaced with ‘Depressed’, Sleepy had become ‘Narcoleptic’, Sneezy was now ‘Allergic’, Dopey was ‘Mentally Challenged’, and Bashful had become ‘Social Anxiety Affected’. Only Doc remained the same.
It made me laugh but the issue it raises is deadly serious. The worrying truth is that character traits we previously acknowledged as common and part of life’s rich tapestry have become medicalised. I have been a practising psychiatrist for over a quarter of a century, yet increasingly I see the pathologising of normal emotions and ever-expanding types of therapy.
A worrying example of this was a survey conducted by the National Union of Students a few years back, which reported that an astonishing 78 per cent of students had experienced a mental health problem in a single year.
I know from my own university days that being a student can involve some difficult moments. I remember the relentless volume of work, the intensity of exams, social pressures – and as for relationships, my status as single was such a constant feature of my life then that I began to wonder if something was wrong with me.

Forty years on, students now have the extra burdens of loan debt, the prevalence of social media and the impact of technology on the job market – more of life’s stresses and strains to be navigated. What has changed, though, is that these difficulties are now framed as mental health problems. Students in the survey did not see themselves as unhappy or distressed, but ill.
This places psychiatry at a crossroads. We should save mental health care for those who really need it. And yet the opposite is happening as the diagnoses of mental illness expand. On the plus side, this ballooning of categories means the stigma that had for so long added to the distress of people suffering from mental health conditions has been removed or lessened and more people now feel willing to come forward to access treatment.

The never-ending notifications and social media scrolling, can take a toll on your mental well-being, suggests a study. According to author and psychologist Adam Grant, who shared the findings of his study on X (Twitter), taking a break from mobile internet could actually improve your focus, mood, and physical and mental health. In the study, participants who blocked mobile internet for two weeks ended up socialising more, exercising regularly, reading books, and generally feeling happier. They reported lower levels of anxiety and depression, along with better focus and concentration. The AMA defines health equity as “optimal health for all.” The work of psychiatrist Stephanie Eng, MD, is a reminder that this means mental as well as physical health. Dr. Eng, an assistant professor of psychiatry and an attending physician in a 22-bed inpatient acute psychosis unit at a behavioral health hospital in White Plains, New York, is also part of the third cohort of a program training physicians to be the next generation of health equity advocacy leaders. These physicians are participating in the Medical Justice in Advocacy Fellowship, which is a collaborative initiative created by the AMA Center for Health Equity and the Satcher Health Leadership Institute at the Morehouse School of Medicine. Fellows participate in a three-day, in-person learning intensive at the beginning of the fellowship and subsequently engage in monthly learning sessions with a multidisciplinary group of nationally renowned experts, scholars, researchers and current and former policymakers across all levels of government. The fellowship is just one of the ways the AMA is working to advance health equity. The AMA Center for Health Equity works to embed health equity across the AMA organization so that health equity becomes part of the practice, process, action, innovation and organizational performance and outcomes. During her residency training, Dr. Eng became interested in providing care to urban, underserved populations experiencing various systems of inequity that increased their psychiatric morbidity and mortality. Her research focuses on the effects of implicit bias on clinical decision-making. Dr. Eng also did fellowship in forensic psychiatry, and her previous research includes examining inequities in the use of chemical sedation and physical restraints and variations in the psychiatric medications that are available to be prescribed in U.S. prisons. After meeting with members of Congress in February during the AMA National Advocacy Conference, Dr. Eng took time to speak with an AMA news writer about the Medical Justice in Advocacy Fellowship, her research, her psychiatry practice and her efforts to promote health equity. AMA: What prompted your interest in the Medical Justice in Advocacy Fellowship? Dr. Eng: As a psychiatrist, I've become aware that it's been challenging to care for our patients who come from difficult social situations. They often have housing insecurity, food insecurity, and they don't have easy access to medical care. And so, I found that it was challenging on a day-to-day basis to care for patients, considering these larger structural inequities that were making it difficult to carry out good care during a clinical encounter. When I became a forensic fellow, this became even more apparent to me because now I was caring for patients who were even more marginalized, who were in even more difficult social situations. There were people who were justice-involved, and I was looking for a way to figure out how I can build an alliance with people who are doing similar things because some of these structural inequities—on a day-to-day basis—feel really burdensome and difficult to overcome. I felt being allied with other people could help with that. And I also wanted to figure out if there were ways to advocate for patients outside of the clinical encounter, because there's only so much I can do for patients in the social situations that they come from when it's a 30-minute or one-hour appointment. What are ways that I can advocate for a change outside of that? So I was looking for that when I applied to this fellowship.

Children’s screen time shapes their mental health as teens

A new long-term study indicates that children who spend more time on screens during their early years – particularly on phones and tablets – experience higher levels of stress and depressive symptoms once they enter adolescence. The eight-year study, conducted in Finland and published in the journal JAMA Network Open, offers fresh insights for parents deciding when and how to give their kids digital access, especially given the rising mental health challenges among the youth. According to the experts, between one-quarter and one-third of adolescents worldwide experience mental health issues, with first symptoms usually appearing during the teenage years. The researchers see their findings as additional evidence that parents might want to limit screen time and encourage active play, since cultivating certain habits early may serve as a buffer against future psychological distress.
Screens and teen health
Scientists drew data from the Physical Activity and Nutrition in Children (PANIC) study, a project that tracked 187 Finnish children aged between 6 and 9 years until they were 15 to16. Over the course of eight years, the team monitored the participants’ physical activity, screen time, sleep patterns, and eating behaviors. Then, as teenagers, those same participants were assessed for mental health using standardized measures of stress and depressive symptoms. The findings revealed that teens who accumulated more total screen time, specifically on mobile devices, ended up showing significantly higher levels of stress and depression.
The role of physical activity
Encouragingly, a high level of physical activity during childhood proved to have the opposite effect. Teens who remained active – particularly in structured or supervised settings – demonstrated stronger mental health outcomes, even after accounting for factors like body composition, puberty stage, and parents’ educational background. This trend was more pronounced among boys, who seemed to derive a greater protective effect against stress from exercise than girls. Meanwhile, diet quality and sleep duration did not show notable links to teen mental health in this research. While this does not rule out their importance for overall well-being, it suggests that daily movement and minimized screen time may have more pronounced effects when it comes to adolescent stress and depression levels.

Women's mental health a ticking time-bomb in India: How to defuse crisis

An alarming women’s mental health crisis is staring India and the world in the face. Globally, women are nearly twice likelier than men to experience anxiety and depression. India accounts for 36.6 per cent of global suicide deaths in women, says the Lancet study ‘Gender differentials and state variations in suicide deaths in India: the global burden of disease study 1990-2016’, published in 2018. Despite such disturbing figures, stigma and societal taboos continue to keep scores of Indian women with mental health issues from seeking professional help. A recent assessment highlights the grim situation. ‘Unveiling the Silent Struggle’, a report by Mpower, a mental health social enterprise of the Aditya Birla Education Trust, has found that one in every two Indian women battle chronic stress over work-life balance, financial pressures and social expectations. The report is based on mental health interventions for 1.3 million women over a year across India. The survey covered a wide spectrum of women, including college students, corporate professionals, rural women and women in the armed forces. The report states that a staggering 47 per cent of women, especially those aged 18 to 35 years, suffer from insomnia, which affects their cognitive and emotional wellbeing, while 41 per cent feel emotionally distressed due to limited social circles. Almost 38 per cent of the respondents reported heightened anxiety about career growth and financial stability. Women in Mumbai reported high levels of academic stress and corporate burnout, whereas in Delhi, the majority raised safety concerns, which contributed to higher post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety. In Kolkata, despite the presence of strong social networks, stigma prevented many women from seeking help. “Mental health remains a silent struggle for many women, often deprioritised amidst family and societal expectations. Seeking timely intervention is crucial,” said Dr Harshida Bhansali, senior psychiatrist and Mumbai centre head of Mpower. On the factors impacting women’s mental health, she elaborated: “Relationship concerns, separation and emotional dysregulation contribute to parenting struggles, including raising children with emotional difficulties, special needs or non-suicidal self-injury. Other factors adding to the mental health burden are lack of autonomy in decision-making, financial dependence, single parenting, fertility and hormonal concerns.”

A recent study has identified a new area that can be influenced, diagnosed, and treated before birth: neuropsychiatric disorders. The bill's authors define, in the bill's wording, the syndrome as "the acute onset of paranoia in otherwise normal persons that is in reaction to the policies and presidencies of President Donald J. Trump," and go further to argue that it "produces an inability to distinguish between legitimate policy differences and signs of psychic pathology in President Donald J. Trump's behavior." Lucero, appearing on a podcast recently, claimed that the idea for the bill germinated from Elon Musk calling the syndrome — which is not listed in the current edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, nor any past editions — "a real thing." He went on to say that it would "allow for a coding ... a specific coding." Minnesota Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy pushed back, calling the bill "wasteful, frivolous and shameful," and called it "possibly the worst bill in Minnesota history." "If it is meant as a joke, it is a waste of staff time and taxpayer resources that trivializes serious mental health issues. If the authors are serious, it is an affront to free speech and an expression of a dangerous level of loyalty to an authoritarian president. The authors should be ashamed, and the citizens we're hearing from are rightfully outraged," Murphy said. The bill is unlikely to pass either chamber of the Minnesota Legislature. In the Senate, where it was introduced, it won't get a committee hearing because Democrats have a one-seat majority. In the House, it's tied, with an agreement that no bill will get to the floor for a vote without bipartisan support. As of Monday, there has been no version of this bill introduced in the Minnesota House. On Monday, Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson responded to the outrage, saying that "Senate Republicans have always supported mental health funding, trying to make sure that there are resources available for that." However, Ritu Nilofer, a clinical psychologist and psychotherapist, is taking it one step further. She hosted the first session of Therapist Talks by Ritu at Lamakaan, becoming Hyderabad’s first RCI-licensed therapist to publicly start an open conversation about mental health. “Connection only happens when you sit with people and talk to them, and very few clinical psychologists reach out. I want people to know that I am physically accessible to them. There is still a widespread belief that mental health, therapists and therapy exist somewhere else, away from daily life. That’s exactly what I want to break,” she said. This is not Ritu’s first attempt at increasing awareness and accessibility. Fourteen years after the Great East Japan Earthquake, researchers are continuing to study the mental health and development of children born in the wake of the disaster, along with the well-being of their parents. Experts have emphasized the importance of sustained support to address lingering emotional and psychological challenges they may face. A study led by Junko Yagi, a professor at Iwate Medical University, has tracked 223 parent-child pairs in Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima prefectures since 2015. The findings indicate that children are more likely to experience developmental and behavioral issues if their parents experience psychological distress. At the same time, children’s behavioral problems can place additional stress on their parents, creating a negative symbiotic relationship. The study has facilitated in connecting children exhibiting developmental delays with specialized institutions. With appropriate care and community support, it has been shown that children can gradually overcome developmental setbacks in tandem with their parents' recovery, Yagi said. “The conditions of parents and children are deeply interconnected,” Yagi said, emphasizing the necessity of holistic family-based interventions. She also highlighted the importance of trauma-informed care, advocating for a sensitive approach when interacting with those affected by the disaster. “People dealing with trauma need to be met with calm and empathetic communication,” she said. The report highlights a worrying trend — each younger generation is experiencing poorer mental health than the one before, with India mirroring this global decline. The study, which analysed data on psychological well-being, found that ultra-processed food, which constitutes a growing portion of daily diets, is linked to depression, reduced emotional and cognitive control, and overall mental distress. In some demographics, UPF consumption could be responsible for up to 30% of mental health issues. However, food habits are only part of the crisis. The report points to multiple interconnected factors driving the decline in mental health, including increasing social isolation, early smartphone exposure, and environmental toxins. Younger generations report weaker family bonds, fewer close friendships, and rising parental neglect, all of which contribute to loneliness and anxiety. The growing dependence on smartphones, particularly from childhood, has been associated with sleep disruptions and cyberbullying - factors that further impact emotional well-being, as per the findings. The report, based on data from over a million responses worldwide, highlights that young adults are struggling with severe mental distress, while older generations remain relatively stable. Findings show that the pandemic triggered a steep drop in mental well-being among young people between 2019 and 2021, with no significant improvement since then. Chronic stress may raise stroke risk for younger women

Some people living with chronic stress have a higher risk of stroke, according to a study published on March 5, 2025, online in Neurology®, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology. The study looked at younger adults and found an association between stress and stroke, with no known cause, in female participants, but not male participants. This study does not prove that stress causes stroke; it only shows an association. For the study, researchers looked at 426 people aged 18 to 49 who had an ischemic stroke with no known cause. They were matched for age and sex with 426 people who did not have stroke. Ischemic stroke is when blood flow is blocked to part of the brain. It can lead to weakness, trouble speaking, vision problems or even death. Participants completed a questionnaire about stress levels over a one-month period. Those with stroke were asked after their stroke to record stress levels in the month prior to their stroke. Participants were asked 10 questions, such as "In the last month, how often have you felt that you were unable to control the important things in your life?" Scores for each question ranged from zero to four, with four meaning "very often." A total score of 0 to 13 represented low stress; 14 to 26, moderate stress; and 27 to 40, high stress. Those with stroke had an average score of 13 compared to those without stroke who had an average score of 10. People with stroke were more likely to have at least moderate stress levels. Of those with stroke, 46% had moderate or high stress levels compared to 33% of those who did not have stroke. After adjusting for factors that could affect risk of stroke such as education level, alcohol use and blood pressure, researchers found for female participants, moderate stress was associated with a 78% increased risk of stroke and high stress was associated with a 6% increased risk. Researchers did not find a link between stress and stroke in male participants. "More research is needed to understand why women who feel stressed, but not men, may have a higher risk of stroke," said Martinez-Majander. "In addition, we need to further explore why the risk of stroke in women was higher for moderate stress than high stress. Knowing more about how stress plays a role could help us to create better ways to prevent these strokes."A limitation of the study was that people experiencing higher levels of stress may have been less likely to enroll in the study, which could have affected the results. The study was supported by the Helsinki and Uusimaa Hospital District, Academy of Finland, The Finnish Medical Foundation, The Sigrid Jusélius Foundation and Sahlgrenska University Hospital.

Depression and pain share some of the same biological pathways and neurotransmitters. About 75% of people with depression suffer recurring or chronic pain, research shows. In a Canadian study published in the journal Pain, people with depression were four times more likely to have intense or disabling neck and lower back pain than those who were not depressed. "When you're in a negative state, you're apt to tune into your body more carefully, and therefore feel any discomforts more acutely," Kravitz explains.
2. You're gaining weight
Where did that extra roll come from? Maybe from all the late-night ice cream, you've been inhaling? Or from the frozen dinners you've been eating because you don't feel like shopping or cooking? Although comfort food can raise levels of the mood-boosting brain chemical serotonin, over time emotional eating can lead to weight gain and feelings of guilt and shame, plus it does nothing to treat the underlying causes of depression.
3. You have a short fuse
If the slightest mishap sends you into a rage, or grouchy is your new normal, you may be depressed. In a 2013 study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association, 54% of people with depression reported feeling hostile, grumpy, argumentative, foul-tempered, or angry. "Once you’re on the negative side of the house, you're more accessible to the rooms where other negative moods hang out — irritability, frustration, and anger," says Simon Rego, PsyD, associate professor of clinical psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and director of psychology training at Montefiore Medical Center. "You're not directly there, but it's a short walk."
4. You feel nothing
Feeling blah? Neutral? Numb? "Most of us have motivations that get us out of bed in the morning, whether it's work, exercise, socializing, or making breakfast," says Rego. "But for people who are depressed, those pulls dry up." And things that once brought tears or smiles now barely register.
5. Your drinking has increased
If you're having several glasses of alcohol every night, it's probably more than a rough day at work. Nearly one-third of people with depression also have an alcohol problem, research shows. And though one drink can take the edge off, a second or third can amplify negative emotions and signs of depression — anger, aggressiveness, anxiety, and greater depression. It's important to note that you don't have to be a raging alcoholic to be abusing alcohol. The healthy limit, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is one drink per day for women, and two drinks per day for men.

6. You're glued to social media
Or gambling or shopping — doing anything in excess, especially online. Several studies confirm that people who go online compulsively and have more virtual social interactions than real ones may be depressed. They may feel deprived of real human companionship and/or may be using the online world to escape from their thoughts and feelings. While doom-scrolling and depression are separate diagnoses, they often overlap. "The quest for a short-term boost is a common coping mechanism," says Rego.
7. Your head is in the clouds
Daydreaming a lot lately? About becoming a movie star, falling madly in love, how your friend's kid is smarter than yours or the boss has it in for you? Psychologists from Harvard University have shown that we're happiest when our minds are firmly rooted in the present moment, and when our minds wander, it can make us wistful, anxious, and unhappy.
8. You can't make up your mind
When we’re depressed, those cognitive processes take a big hit," says Rego. "Little things we normally don't think twice about suddenly become weighty decisions."
9. you’ve stopped brushing your hair.
it's a spectrum," says Rego. "Neglecting your physical well-being and appearance is only problematic when it crosses over into distress or dysfunction." Ultimately, not caring what you look like on the outside is a strong sign of problems happening on the inside and a sign of depression.

The Department of Psychiatry at PGIMER organised a one-day Continuing Rehabilitation Programme on ‘Neuropsychology: Assessment and Intervention’, bringing together mental health professionals and rehabilitation specialists from across the country. The event aimed to enhance the understanding of neuropsychological assessments and interventions in mental health and rehabilitation. The programme was inaugurated by organising chairperson Prof D Basu, Head of the Department of Psychiatry, who delivered the welcome address. The chief guest, Prof RK Ratho, Dean of Academics, and guest of honour, Dr Roopesh BN, Additional Professor in the Department of Clinical Psychology at NIMHANS, emphasised the growing role of neuropsychology in modern psychiatry. PGI holds workshop on neuropsychology. The morning session included a discussion on structural and functional aspects of the brain by Prof Shubmohan Singh, followed by a session by Dr Roopesh BN on neurocognitive assessments in children.
In the afternoon, Dr Jyoti Mishra, Assistant Professor, GMCH-32, discussed neuropsychological deficits in psychiatric disorders, while Prof Hardeep Lal Joshi covered the fundamentals of neuropsychological assessments and interventions in adults.

Diagnosis and Management of Catatonia via Telepsychiatry: Case Series and Guide for Clinical Practice

Catatonia is a complex neuropsychiatric syndrome characterized by motor and behavioral signs and may occur because of multiple medical, psychiatric, and neurological conditions.1,2 Catatonia is diagnosed through a variety of validated rating scales, the most common of which is the Bush-Francis Catatonia Rating Scale (BFCRS), which is a 23-item scale that defines each catatonic sign, rates its severity, and provides a standardized schema for clinical examination.3 The assessment and diagnosis of catatonia generally requires a physical examination, as symptoms such as rigidity, waxy flexibility, mitgehen, gegenhalten, and grasp reflex require hands-on examination.3 Catatonia has a prevalence of 10% to 25% in acute psychiatric inpatients, but estimates show it can be present in up to 3% of acute neurology patients and 4% of patients in intensive care.2 Other studies have found prevalences of up to 20% in patients with general medical conditions4 and up to 35% in intensive care patients.5 Catatonia is often underdiagnosed in the general hospital,2,6 with retrospective studies showing up to 59% of cases not diagnosed during admission.1 Consultation-liaison psychiatry (CL) is a subspecialty of psychiatry focused on the diagnosis and management of psychiatric disorders that are comorbid with general medical and surgical illness.7 As such, CL psychiatrists, given their expertise at the interface of medicine and psychiatry, are uniquely poised to diagnose and treat catatonia. A retrospective chart review study of patients deemed to meet criteria for catatonia showed a greater than 44 times odds of diagnosis of catatonia in the general hospital when CL psychiatry has been consulted during the admission vs when it was not.1 However, access to consulting psychiatrists may often be limited in remote and rural areas.8,9 The 2017 Merrit Hawkins report, which provides insights into physician supply and demand, highlights an uneven distribution of psychiatrists around the country.10 Approximately 80% of rural counties lack even a single psychiatrist.11 Telepsychiatry may present a solution for these remote hospitals to effectively diagnose and treat catatonia.3 CL psychiatry services have developed telepsychiatry consultations to remote hospitals, which has shown satisfactory clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction.8,9 The biggest challenge to the diagnosis and management of catatonia using a CL telepsychiatry modality is the inability of the consulting psychiatrist to perform a physical exam via telepsychiatry. Our CL telepsychiatry service at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center provides consultations to 6 nonurban or remote hospitals in Pennsylvania. In all of them, there is an on-the-ground clinician (nurse with psychiatric background or master’s level behavioral health clinician) to assist with telemedicine evaluations. These clinicians have been trained in performing the BFCRS and the appropriate physical exam maneuvers and assist the CL psychiatrists in being able to capture these symptoms and complement the telemedicine evaluation. In this case series, we outline 3 cases of catatonia that were diagnosed and managed by CL psychiatry via telemedicine. We will alsoprovide guidance based on our service’s experience to increase the odds of success when diagnosing and managing catatonia via CL telepsychiatry.

Constant mockery, snide remarks, mental torture’: How to counter the culture of bullying

I have very fond memories of school, but at the same time, some of my darkest days are from there too—when I was relentlessly bullied by a group of classmates in grade 6. From body-shaming me to humiliating me in front of other students, they took pride in tormenting me. While I stood up for myself by complaining to the principal and school counselor, others like me don't always have the same opportunity. I was able to tackle my bullies, but not everyone is lucky enough to do so.
Take Mihir Ahammed, for example. The 15-year-old student from Kochi tragically died by suicide after being taken to the toilet in school, forced to lick the seat, and have his head submerged in it. He made this drastic decision after enduring mental and physical abuse, along with facing colourism due to his dark complexion. But Ahammed is not alone in his struggles. According to a UNICEF study titled Strategy for Ending Violence Against Children, at least 36 percent of Indian students face harassment and bullying on school campuses—slightly higher than the global average, where at least one in three students aged 13–15 experience bullying.
Devanshu Mandokar, 22, a PR executive based in Pune, also recalls his experiences of being bullied. It started in grade 9 when classmates would make snide remarks about his posture. This bullying extended to his coaching center, where he was relentlessly demeaned. When the situation became unbearable, he wrote a letter to the head of the coaching department. Unfortunately, his attempt to seek help "shattered" his heart. "The coaching head came into the class and read my letter aloud to everyone. All the students erupted in laughter, calling me a 'cry baby' for addressing the bullying, instead of supporting me and reprimanding the responsible students," he recounted. Due to the intense bullying, Mandokar eventually changed schools, where he found peers who were kind to him.
Similarly, Nandini Upadhyay, 25, a musician in Delhi, encountered bullying for the first time when she moved to Slovenia and attended an international school. Her introverted nature made it difficult for her to make friends. "Eventually, some classmates began to mock me passively for being Indian, making fun of my culture and appearance," she recalled. This experience made her question her self-worth, leading to a cycle of self-hatred and low confidence.

Tawang launches targeted mental health interventions

TAWANG, 24 Feb: In a step towards strengthening mental health services, the District Counselling Centre here, under the National Mental Health Programme (NMHP), on Monday launched a comprehensive initiative titled ‘Targeted interventions for anxiety disorders, stress, depression, PTSD, and general mental health’. The initiative aims to enhance accessibility to psychological care, promote awareness, and provide effective mental health interventions across Tawang district. The launch event, held at the DC office conference hall, was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Kanki Darang, in the presence of DMO Dr Rinchin Neema, District Programme Officer (NMHP) Dr Sangey Thinley, and others. The event was organised by the District Health Society, demonstrating the district’s strong commitment to mental health advancement. The key objectives of the initiative are expandingmental health interventions for individuals suffering from anxiety, depression, PTSD, and stress-related disorders; strengthening community outreach and awareness to reduce stigma around mental health issues; enhancing healthcare infrastructure to ensure access to professional counselling and medical support; and collaborating with local healthcare professionals and organisations to ensure effective programme implementation. Speaking at the event, Darang emphasised the importance of addressing mental health challenges and ensuring that support is readily available to those in need. He highlighted that mental wellbeing is essential for overall community development, and encouraged people to seek help without hesitation.Dr Neema reiterated the district’s commitment to improving mental healthcare services and ensuring that individuals experiencing mental health difficulties receive timely assistance.The initiative marks a progressive step in the district’s ongoing efforts to build a more resilient and mentally healthy society. In a rapidly evolving digital landscape, today's youth are increasingly relying on technology to seek mental health support. With over 1.2 billion young people aged between 15 and 24 globally, the demand for accessible and effective mental health solutions has never been greater. Recent statistics reveal that Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) technologies are achieving an impressive 93% accuracy in predicting mental health conditions, making them invaluable tools in the realm of therapy. As mental health issues continue to rise among young people, traditional therapy methods often fall short due to accessibility and stigma. A recent survey indicated that approximately 61% of youth have utilised digital technologies, such as mobile apps and online platforms, to manage their mental well-being. This shift towards digital therapy is not just a trend,it represents a fundamental change in how mental health services are delivered. Teletherapy has gained traction, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, with many young individuals finding comfort in virtual sessions. According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, 86% of therapy clients believe that teletherapy is more effective than in-person sessions. This preference highlights a growing acceptance of technology as a legitimate avenue for mental health support. Moreover, around 70% of individuals reported feeling comfortable seeking mental health support from chatbots or AI-driven platforms. This indicates a significant shift in attitudes towards technology-assisted therapy, especially among younger demographics who are often more tech-savvy. The reliance on technology for therapy is particularly crucial given that nearly 44% of individuals with mental health conditions do not receive treatment due to barriers such as stigma, cost, and limited access to providers. Digital platforms can bridge this gap by providing affordable and anonymous support options.

Supreme Court Directs Union To File Affidavits On Establishment And Functioning Of Central Mental Health Authority

The Supreme Court recently asked the Union Government to file a detailed affidavit indicating the establishment and functioning of the Central Mental Health Authority, State Mental Health Authority and Mental Health Review Board under the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017.
The order was passed in a writ petition filed under Article 32, seeking certain directions with respect to the persons requiring mental healthcare. Since January 3, 2019, the Supreme Court has been passing directions in this writ petition.
On February 7, a bench of Justices PS Narasimha and Prashant Kumar Mishra was informed that the Parliament enacted the Mental Healthcare Act, which contemplates the establishment of these three authorities.
Taking this into consideration, the Court ordered:
"Ms. Aishwarya Bhati, learned Additional Solicitor General appears on behalf of the Union. We direct that Union of India shall file a detailed affidavit indicating the establishment and functioning of the Central Mental Health Authority, State Mental Health Authority and Mental Health Review Board. The affidavit shall also indicate the statutory and mandatory appointments to the authority and the review board. The said affidavit may be filed by 06.03.2025."
The Court will hear the matter on March 21.

The Probiotic Breakthrough for Anxiety Relief: How Gut Bacteria Influence Mental Health

Unlocking the Gut-Brain Connection
Scientists from Duke-NUS Medical School and the National Neuroscience Institute have identified a significant link between gut microbes and anxiety-related behavior. Their newly published study in EMBO Molecular Medicine reveals that microbial metabolites specifically indoles directly influence brain activity associated with anxiety. This discovery opens the door to potential probiotic-based treatments that could support mental health.
Microbes and Anxiety: A Hidden Link
The research team thus set out to investigate the role microbes play in anxious behavior. In preclinical studies, the scientists observed that in a germ-free environment, those which were not exposed to live microbes, showed significantly more anxiety-related behavior than those with typical resident live microbes. Further investigation revealed that the increased anxiety was associated with heightened activity in a brain region involved in processing emotions such as fear and anxiety, the basolateral amygdala (BLA). This was further identified to be related to specialized proteins within brain cells known as the calcium-dependent SK2 channels, associated with anxiety behavior. In conditions when the body and brain are exposed to live microbe metabolites, the SK2 channels act like a clutch, thus preventing neurons from becoming overly excited and firing too frequently A Closer Look at Microbial Influence Associate Professor Shawn Je from Duke-NUS Neuroscience and Behavioural Disorders Programme and one of the lead authors, explained: Our findings reveal the specific and intricate neural process that links microbes to mental health. Those without any live microbes showed higher levels of anxious behavior than those with live bacteria. Essentially, the lack of these microbes disrupted the way their brains functioned, particularly in areas that control fear and anxiety, leading to anxious behavior.
Reintroducing Microbes to Reduce Anxiety
To better understand the role of microbes in this process, the researchers introduced live microbes into germ-free mice.[3] This reduced the elevated neuronal activity in the basolateral amygdala and thus SK2 channel activity. As a result, the mice showed significantly less anxiety-related behaviortheir emotional responses became like those exposed to microbes.
